Community Shelters & Safe Rooms

Faulkner County is committed to providing safe shelters for residents during severe weather events, including tornadoes and other hazardous conditions. Below is an overview of the locations, rules, and procedures for accessing community shelters and safe rooms throughout the county. We encourage all residents to familiarize themselves with the nearest shelter and the guidelines for safe use.

Faulkner County Government Shelters

Shelter Locations:

  1. Behind the OEM Building:
    57 Acklin Gap Road, Conway, AR 72032
  2. In the City of Holland:
    336 Sawmill Road, Holland, AR 72173

 

Rules & Regulations:

  • Door Locking: All 3 deadbolts must be locked from the inside for protection during severe weather. If the door is locked during a weather event, knock to be let in.
  • Open to the Public: Shelters are open during Severe Thunderstorm or Tornado Warnings.
  • Weapons: No weapons are allowed in the shelter.
  • Smoking & Tobacco: Smoking and tobacco use in any form is prohibited.
  • Alcohol & Drugs: Alcohol and non-prescribed drugs are prohibited.
  • Pets: Animals are not allowed in the shelter, but can remain in your vehicle.

Saferoom Procedures:

  • Public Access: Shelters are available to the public during non-school hours. School hours are from 7:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m., Monday through Friday.
  • Automatic Access: Shelters are wired with the City of Conway’s Severe Weather Alert System. When a Tornado Warning is issued, the doors open automatically for public access.
  • Weekly Checks: Doors will be checked weekly to ensure they are functioning properly during storm season.
  • Visit in Advance: We encourage community members to visit shelters during non-weather events to familiarize themselves with parking, entrances, and other logistics.

Greenbrier, Springhill, & Wooster Schools Shelters

Shelter Locations:

  1. Greenbrier Westside Elementary:
    65 Garrett Road, Greenbrier, AR
  2. Greenbrier High School:
    72 Green Valley Drive, Greenbrier, AR
  3. Greenbrier Junior High School:
    10 School Drive, Greenbrier, AR
  4. Greenbrier Eastside Elementary:
    61 Glenn Lane, Greenbrier, AR
  5. Wooster Elementary:
    9 Church Circle, Wooster, AR
  6. Springhill Elementary:

Safe Room Procedures:

During School Hours:

  • Evacuation: Students and staff will evacuate immediately to shelters in the event of a Tornado Warning.
  • Public Access: A designated area will be made available for community members. You must sign in with your name and phone number, and remain in a separate area from students. Pets must be in a pet carrier.

 

After School Hours:

  • Shelters will be unlocked, and a school employee will assist the community. Community members must sign in and follow instructions. Pets must be in a pet carrier.

 


 

Mayflower Schools & Government Shelters

Shelter Locations:

  1. Mayflower Middle School:

  2. Mayflower Elementary School:
    4 Grove, Mayflower
  3. Mayflower City Hall:
    2 Ashmore, Mayflower

 

Safety Procedures:

  • School Hours: Safe rooms are designated for students and employees. Public access is allowed after accommodating students and employees.
  • Manual Access: Safe rooms are not equipped with automatic locks. Access requires manual unlocking.
  • Conduct Expectations: Occupants must follow site coordinator instructions. No pets (except certified service animals), no noise, no smoking, no alcohol, and no profanity.
  • Weapons: No weapons are allowed.
  • Sign In: Community members must sign in with their name and phone number.

 


 

Vilonia Schools & Government Shelters

Shelter Locations:

  1. Vilonia High School:

  3. Vilonia Elementary School:

Safety Procedures:

  • Public Access (After School Hours):
    Shelters open for public use when school is not in session. Pets must be in a pet carrier.
  • Automatic Access: Doors open automatically when a Tornado Warning is issued.
  • Primary and Elementary Safe Rooms: These serve as daycare facilities after school hours, so they apply the in-session rule for pet and public access.

Vilonia City Hall Shelter

Shelter Location:

Between Vilonia City Hall (18 Bise Dr) and Vilonia Senior Citizens Center (10 Bise Dr).
Note: Space is limited at this shelter.

  2. No Smoking or Tobacco – Smoking and tobacco use are prohibited inside the shelters.
  3. No Alcohol or Drugs – Alcohol and non-prescribed drugs are prohibited.
  4. Pets – Pets are generally not allowed, except in specific cases (e.g., certified service animals or in pet carriers).

Please note that Faulkner County OEM is not responsible for the operation of tornado sirens within the county. Tornado sirens are maintained by the individual cities or fire districts where they are located. The OEM does not have control or authority over these sirens.
